What is meant by burnout?

The term "burnout" is used for psychological complaints such as persistent exhaustion, lack of energy, fatigue, frustration, subjectively reduced performance and cynicism, which occur in connection with a very high workload. However, burnout is strictly speaking not a mental illness, but rather a state of risk of developing a mental or even physical illness if the strain continues. A burnout can therefore turn into depression or another illness.
