December 2019

Happy holidays

The Diversity Coordination Office wishes you happy holidays and a Happy New Year. From 2.1.2020 we will see you again!

Christmas around the globe

Christmas is a Christian holiday, which is celebrated very differently depending on the national tradition and religious imprint:
In Spain, Christmas is celebrated on 24th of December, but the gift-giving ceremony does not take place until 6th of January. Christian Indians do not decorate a pine tree, but a banana or a mango tree for Christmas and in Finland they go to the sauna together. While only very few people in China are Christians, the streets and squares are nevertheless decorated with Christmas decorations. In many countries there are large banquets, in Nigeria for example with turkey, beef, goat, sheep, ram or chicken. In Chile, they also drink a Christmas drink made from coffee, milk, liquor, cinnamon and sugar.
In Armenia, Christmas is not celebrated until 6th of January, and in the Ukraine there is even a day longer wait, because according to the Julian calendar, the holidays are postponed for Orthodox Christians.
The picture shows the Jul-Bock on a Christmas card from Norway, which traditionally brings presents in Scandinavia.

Number of the month: December

The number of the month: 28.1% of students at the HHU did not acquire their university entrance qualification at a "Gymnasium". This is reflected in the HHU's 2018 statistics, which show a slight increase compared to the last survey in 2017. For support programmes for students, information on further aspects of the "educational background" dimension and even more data and facts, please click here.

Regulations of the HHU for Protection against Discrimination with Respect to the AGG

Discrimination has no place on our campus, not on the grounds of ethnic origin, gender, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual identity. For this reason, the HHU has established a system of protection against such discrimination in order to prevent discrimination, harassment, violence, stalking and harassment and, in the event of conflict, to provide clear procedures and possible sanctions. You can find out what the General Equal Treatment Act actually says and where you can get support in the event of discrimination, on the website of the AGG Complaints Office of the HHU. The text of the regulations can be found here (german).

Members and associates of the HHU can be nominated for the Diversity Prize until 15.02.2020! Representatives of all status groups - students, teachers and employees - will be honoured for their special commitment to diversity, equal opportunities and tolerance at the HHU.
